Why is G negative in Newton's formula of universal gravitation? | Yahoo Answers

It's not the G that is negative, it's the entire right side of the equation. The negative just means that it is an attractive, rather than repulsive force. If it wasn't negative, it would imply that the gravitational potential energy DECREASED as you moved farther away from it, which doesn't make sense. The negative resolves this by making things that are farther away have more potential energy than things that are closer.
